GLOBAL TROPICAL CYCLONE TRACKS - FEBRUARY 2000 SOUTH INDIAN OCEAN (SIO) - South Indian Ocean West of Longitude 90E NOTE: The tracking coordinates, 10-min avg MSW, and estimates of central pressure were obtained from the RSMC La Reunion's advisories, while the 1-min avg MSW were taken from JTWC's warnings. A special thanks is due to Patrick Hoareau of Rennes, France, (and a former resident of La Reunion) for preparing the tracks for Tropical Storms Damienne and Felicia and the Eline portion of long-lived Tropical Cyclone Leon-Eline (which originated in the Australian Region). Since Leon-Eline began in the Australian Region, the complete track for this cyclone is included in the section for the Australian Region. ************************************************************************* Storm Name: DAMIENNE Cyclone Number: 10S Basin: SIO Date Time Lat Lon Cent MSW MSW Remarks (GMT) Press 1-min 10-min (mb) (kts) (kts) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 00 JAN 31 0600 11.4 S 74.9 E 1000 25 Winds 30 kts locally 00 JAN 31 1200 11.7 S 75.1 E 1000 25 00 JAN 31 1800 12.8 S 75.7 E 1000 25 00 FEB 01 0000 13.3 S 76.5 E 995 30 35 JTWC-0100Z: 12.8S,76.9E 00 FEB 01 0600 13.5 S 78.5 E 992 40 00 FEB 01 1200 14.8 S 78.5 E 992 40 00 FEB 01 1800 16.1 S 78.3 E 992 45 40 00 FEB 02 0000 17.7 S 77.7 E 992 40 00 FEB 02 0600 16.1 S 76.8 E 997 40 30 00 FEB 02 1200 16.7 S 76.7 E 1000 25 Winds 30 kts locally 00 FEB 02 1800 17.3 S 76.1 E 25 JTWC Final Warning ************************************************************************* Storm Name: FELICIA Cyclone Number: 12S Basin: SIO Date Time Lat Lon Cent MSW MSW Remarks (GMT) Press 1-min 10-min (mb) (kts) (kts) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 00 FEB 19 0600 14.1 S 77.4 E 1002 30 See Note 00 FEB 19 1200 14.4 S 78.1 E 1002 30 " 00 FEB 19 1800 14.5 S 77.5 E 999 30 00 FEB 20 0000 15.0 S 76.3 E 993 30 40 JTWC-2330Z: 15.1S,76.8E 00 FEB 20 0600 15.2 S 75.5 E 993 40 00 FEB 20 1200 16.3 S 76.3 E 993 40 00 FEB 20 1800 16.4 S 74.6 E 997 30 00 FEB 21 0000 16.5 S 74.4 E 997 35 30 JTWC: 16.7 S, 74.0 E 00 FEB 21 0600 17.0 S 73.3 E 992 40 00 FEB 21 1200 17.6 S 71.7 E 992 35 40 JTWC: 17.3 S, 72.6 E 00 FEB 21 1800 18.6 S 70.9 E 992 40 00 FEB 22 0000 19.3 S 69.8 E 992 45 40 00 FEB 22 0600 20.8 S 68.4 E 980 55 00 FEB 22 1200 22.1 S 67.7 E 980 45 55 JTWC: 21.8 S, 68.4 E 00 FEB 22 1800 23.1 S 67.3 E 974 60 00 FEB 23 0000 24.5 S 66.6 E 974 50 60 00 FEB 23 0600 25.9 S 66.5 E 974 60 00 FEB 23 1200 27.0 S 65.9 E 976 40 60 00 FEB 23 1800 28.1 S 68.3 E 985 50 00 FEB 24 0000 29.8 S 64.2 E 994 30 40 JTWC: 29.0 S, 65.0 E 00 FEB 24 0600 30.5 S 63.8 E 997 30 Becoming Extratropical Note: System was classified as only a tropical disturbance at these times with MSW near the center of 25 kts, but winds to 30 kts locally were forecast to be occurring well away from the center. ************************************************************************* Storm Name: GLORIA Cyclone Number: 15S Basin: SIO Date Time Lat Lon Cent MSW MSW Remarks (GMT) Press 1-min 10-min (mb) (kts) (kts) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 00 FEB 28 0600 13.8 S 59.0 E 1000 25 00 FEB 28 1200 13.4 S 58.0 E 1000 30 25 30 kts locally to south 00 FEB 28 1800 13.0 S 57.0 E 1000 25 00 FEB 29 0000 13.0 S 55.5 E 997 35 30 JTWC: 13.0 S, 56.6 E 00 FEB 29 0600 12.9 S 55.6 E 997 30 00 FEB 29 1200 12.6 S 53.9 E 40 JTWC Warning 00 FEB 29 1800 12.1 S 54.0 E 997 30 00 MAR 01 0000 11.4 S 52.7 E 997 45 30 JTWC: 12.0 S, 51.5 E 00 MAR 01 0600 13.0 S 51.7 E 990 40 Relocated 00 MAR 01 1200 13.4 S 50.5 E 55 JTWC Warning 00 MAR 01 1800 13.9 S 50.2 E 988 65 45 00 MAR 02 0000 14.7 S 49.7 E 45 Inland - JTWC Warning 00 MAR 02 0600 15.4 S 49.5 E 30 25 MFR Position/Final Wrng 00 MAR 02 1200 16.0 S 48.8 E 30 JTWC Warning 00 MAR 02 1800 16.5 S 47.8 E 25 | 00 MAR 03 0000 17.1 S 47.4 E 25 | 00 MAR 03 0600 17.8 S 46.6 E 25 | 00 MAR 03 1200 17.9 S 46.5 E 25 | 00 MAR 03 1800 18.3 S 45.9 E 25 | 00 MAR 04 0000 18.5 S 45.4 E 25 | 00 MAR 04 0600 18.8 S 45.0 E 25 | 00 MAR 04 1200 19.2 S 44.3 E 25 | 00 MAR 04 1800 19.3 S 44.3 E 25 | 00 MAR 05 0000 19.6 S 44.6 E 25 | 00 MAR 05 0600 20.4 S 43.1 E 25 V ************************************************************************* ************************************************************************* AUSTRALIAN REGION (AUS) - From Longitude 90E Eastward to Longitude 160E NOTE: The tracking information presented below was obtained from operational warnings issued by the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres at Perth, Western Australia; Darwin, Northern Territory; and Brisbane, Queensland. JTWC warnings were utilized for making comparisons and for supplying information for times when the Australian warnings were unavailable. The 10-min MSW values were obtained from the Australian warnings while the 1-min MSW values were assigned by JTWC. The tropical cyclone warnings from Perth report the analyzed cyclone positions at 0400, 1000, 1600, and 2200 UTC instead of the more familiar 0000, 0600, 1200, and 1800 UTC utilized by most TC warning agencies. Note #2: Tropical Cyclone Eline underwent a remarkable intensification just prior to making landfall in Madagascar near Mahanoro around 1500 UTC. JTWC estimated the 1-min MSW at 90 kts, but Philippe Caroff, Chief Forecaster at RSMC La Reunion, indicated that 10-min avg winds of 95 kts (or a 1-min avg MSW of 110 kts) might have been present. Note #3: The 22/1500 UTC warning from JTWC indicated that Eline began making landfall about 40 nm south of Beira around 0300 UTC with 1-min MSW of 115 kts. This agrees with MFR's assessment of 100-kt 10-min avg winds (equivalent to about 115 kts 1-min avg MSW). Eline's second intensification prior to landfall in Mozambique was almost as dramatic as that preceding its landfall in Madagascar. ************************************************************************* Storm Name: MARCIA Cyclone Number: None Basin: AUS Date Time Lat Lon Cent MSW MSW Remarks (GMT) Press 1-min 10-min (mb) (kts) (kts) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 00 FEB 15 0400 14.0 S 101.5 E 1000 25 00 FEB 15 0900 14.5 S 102.5 E 1000 25 00 FEB 15 1600 14.7 S 103.1 E 999 25 00 FEB 15 2200 15.1 S 102.8 E 998 25 25 00 FEB 16 0300 15.0 S 102.0 E 995 45 Named as TC Marcia 00 FEB 16 1000 15.1 S 102.6 E 992 45 00 FEB 16 1600 15.2 S 103.2 E 995 40 00 FEB 16 2200 15.6 S 103.4 E 998 40 00 FEB 17 0400 16.4 S 103.5 E 998 40 Final Perth Warning 00 FEB 17 1800 16.5 S 104.2 E 1003 30 JTWC Outlook 00 FEB 18 0500 16.3 S 104.5 E 999 Perth Outlook 00 FEB 18 1800 15.6 S 103.7 E 1001 30 JTWC Outlook 00 FEB 19 0400 16.5 S 103.0 E 999 Perth Outlook 00 FEB 19 1800 15.6 S 103.7 E 1001 30 JTWC Outlook 00 FEB 20 1800 17.4 S 105.0 E 1002 30 " 00 FEB 21 0400 17.1 S 107.8 E 1005 20 " Note: JTWC never issued any warnings on this system, although the 30-kt winds estimated in the STWOs on 17-20 Feb imply that if the LOW had been in the NWP it would have been considered a tropical depression.
